Outlander Fanatics Tours 2018

We have been running our guided Outlander Tours for twelve years now, and are delighted at their success. However with the arrival of the TV series, we are being asked to include an increasing number of film locations on top of the well tried itinerary, and it doesn't all fit into seven days...

Hence the "Outlander Fanatics Tour" which focuses entirely on Outlander and includes as many of the known filming sites as possible as well as all the places that we know from the books - Edinburgh's Royal Mile, Culloden Battlefield, the Fraser lands.

Each tour is for a maximum of seven people, travelling in a nine seater minibus.

If you are interested in our standard Outlander Tour that fuses Outlander with the history of Scotland, then have a look here.

The outline of the 'Fanatics' tour is as follows...

Day One. We have booked a good Edinburgh city centre hotel with easy access to the Royal Mile. A taxi from the airport will cost about GBP 20.

Day Two. Driver/guide meets you at the hotel for a half day walking tour of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, looking out for burned out print shops and strange looking Chinamen. That afternoon you will go out to Preston Mill (used as the mill where Jamie hid underwater) and then to the church that was used for the wedding. Night in Edinburgh hotel.

Day Three. A day trip to Fife to see Aberdour Castle, (used as the monastery), Dysart (used for Le Havre) and a look at the exterior of Balgonie Castle, used for MacRannoch's. Lunch at Falkland (Inverness 1945) and then to Culross, a fascinating 16th century time capsule (Cranesmuir). Night in Edinburgh hotel.

Culross - a fascinating time capsule

Day Four. 'Lally Broch', 'Fort William' (Blackness Castle) the train station used for tearful 1940s departures (Bo'ness)and 'Wentworth Prison' (Linlithgow Palace). Up to 'Castle Leoch' (Doune Castle) in the afternoon. You stay at a small hotel by Loch Tay.

Day Five. By Rannoch Moor to Glencoe, famous for the massacre of the MacDonalds in 1692,and Fort William, where sadly little remains of the original fort. Then up the Great Glen by the Well of the Seven Heads to pretty Fort Augustus and a visit to Urquhart Castle by Loch Ness. The next two nights are at a B&B in the heart of Inverness.

                                         Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

Day Six. See Culloden Battlefield and the bronze age Clava Cairns with the associated stone circles. The new visitor centre at Culloden offers a detailed explanation of the battle, the background to the conflict and its brutal aftermath; of course we take a walk out on to the field. Then it's Fort George, a massive barracks, now home to the Blackwatch, built after Culloden to combat the Jacobite threat.

Day Seven. A look around Inverness, the Fraser of Lovat clan lands, a (perhaps rather unsettling) visit to the tomb of the 11th Lord Lovat ('The Old Fox') within the Fraser of Lovat Mausoleum. Beauly Priory (where Claire met Maisri the prophetess) and that evening you will have the chance to hold a claymore, targe and dirk yourself.

Day Eight. Down the main road through the Cairngorm National Park to the Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore which was used in the rent gathering scenes. Then to Dunkeld and the church that was used in the witch trial scene. Dinner is included for your final night at a fine country house hotel very close to Edinburgh Airport.

What Outlander Fanatics said about the tour...

Overall Alastair, you nailed it! The only thing you could add would be Jamie and Claire waiting for us at the end of the trip.

Linda Daily, June Fanatics 2017.

My trip was fabulous. Malcolm was so knowledgeable and accommodating. I didn't expect the wonderful stories he told us whilst driving us around. I feel like I truly understand the history of the time. I would highly recommend this trip to every Outlander fan.

Lisa Kelien, USA. June Fanatics, 2017.

Fiona was a marvellous guide; interested, personable and able to answer questions regarding Scottish History and Outlander We really liked her. All accommodations were very good.

Mary Studham, USA.  July Fanatics 2017

The trip was wonderful, it will stay for ever printed in my memory. The places we have seen, those in the program and those on top, were all so “ Outlanderish “ that this could not go wrong. The organisation and the set-up from your side was tip-top. My companions, the Americans , well we fitted all together into one little group of “Outlander” fanatics.

Greetje Wellfens, Belgium. June Fanatics 2017

Hi Alastair - we all LOVED Ian, and the places we saw were absolutely stunning and magical!  Thank so much for arranging another fabulous and unforgettable trip!

Pamela Shank, USA. April Fanatics 2017.

I can't say enough good things about the tour. The itinerary was fabulous and extremely well organized;. Malcolm was very knowledgeable—not only about Outlander, but also the history of Scotland. He is an entertaining storyteller, and he has a great sense of humor. The accomodations were wonderful (they kept getting better at each stop!).

Connie Kern, USA June Fanatics 2017.

Accommodations and Ian were FABULOUS!!  I loved Scotland and would love to return.  I can see myself returning to trace my family connections and having a quiet picnic on the edge of Loch Ness.  Thank you for your wonderful service.

Sue Jacobsen, USA. April Fanatics 2017.

I so totally appreciate the Outlander books and show so much more after being in Scotland and visiting all the different locations.  Julie and I were absolutely thrilled each day.  Seeing the sights and visiting each place used in the show was great.  Hugh did an amazing job of bringing alive the history of your beautiful country and then connecting it to the books and show.”

Lisa Meehan, Pennsylvania, USA. Fanatics 2016.

We enjoyed the tour immensely.  My daughter (who knows nothing about Outlander) enjoyed the company of the other ladies and going to all the sites. We enjoyed listening to Hugh's stories and bits of information that had nothing to do with Outlander but a lot to do with either the countryside or Scottish culture/language.  I would highly recommend it.

Roslyn Zanetic, Australia. Fanatics 2016.

What previous Outlander Tourists have said...

It was so much more than just Outlander. I’m glad I didn’t go on a tour where we just were whisked around to different Outlander sites. The ones we visited were great, but I’m so glad we saw so much more of Scotland. And I’m glad we had you. Best trip ever. "

Jenna Powell, Illinois, USA

"We wanted to say what a wonderful time we had with all of you!  It was truly one of the best trips we've ever taken.  Great company, fabulous sights, and terrific tour director."

Sharon Moore,

South Carolina, USA.

"I have seen person after person on the various Outlander related Facebook pages that I am part of praise you and your tour.   Didn't notice that they had marked your name so that you  would get notification so I wanted to pass along news of how many, many folks have wonderful things to say about you and your tour."

Inez Miller, Florida USA

"Thank you for your time and patience and for making it one of the best experiences of my life.  If money were no object, I would return every year!"

Elaine Paulsen, Texas USA

"Thank you so much for our immersion into Scotland's history. You really brought it to life for me. So many titbits of history to share with friends and family. I think tho that my husband is going to get sick of hearing about it."

Donna Heron, Philadelphia, USA

"Hi Alastair! My Outlander Tour was a dream come true. I have seen the first episode and it is great. I'm so thankful I saw it right after our trip. A million thank yous for a once in a lifetime experience."

Diane Rigger, California, USA

"Thank you so much for our 'Outlander Tour'. It was absolutely magical and I enjoyed every minute of it."

Carrie Brown, Iowa, USA.

"This tour beautifully brought together the dramatic history of Scotland's highland clans with the story of Jamie and Claire Fraser that we all love. With the help of Alastair, our knowledgeable and charming tour guide, the Outlander book characters came to life before us in the castle ruins, heather covered moorland, and Edinburgh pubs. Thank you for a once in a lifetime adventure!"

Claire Hoffman, Seattle, USA.

"Thank you for a great tour! It was amazing the things you had planned for us and the unique opportunities we had. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the week exploring the locale of the books, but also the beauty and history of Scotland, especially the Highlands. This was fantastic!"

Karen Corvan, California, USA.
